What is family law and who is a family lawyer?
The area of law that deals with the matters relating to the family or domestic ambit are what we mean by ‘family law’. A body of statutes and case precedents governs the relationship between individuals who have some domestic bond. Though, it is mostly observed that individuals who are related to each other by blood or marriages form parties to a family law case, people who are distantly related or casually related also become parties to such cases. Family law is often interchangeably used with the term matrimonial law. Though this is partly acceptable it is not the only thing that comes under the huge umbrella of family law. Matrimony or such domestic relation between a husband and wife form only a part of family law.
Excluding marriages and civil union or partnership, matters relating to adoption, surrogacy, juvenile adjudication, paternity ascertaining, child abuse, child abduction, termination of any relationship, etc. form a part of family law. A lawyer who facilitates such dealings in accordance with the existing law of the country before the court may be said to be family lawyers.

Property sharing and distribution as well as settling conflicts arising from it within the various heirs or claiming persons shall also fall under the ambit of family law and require the interference of family lawyers for peaceful and lawful settlement. Conflicts relating to marriages such as divorce and alimony settlement are also to be sorted by the family lawyers. The custody of the child born in a marriage is often a matter of dispute among partners wanting a divorce. Settling this deal peacefully and by abiding the law while representing each of their clients before the court requires family lawyers. Visitation rights also fall under the category of family law.
When are family lawyers required?
The majority of cases that arise having the need to be represented by family lawyers are related to marriages. Most aptly, termination of marriages and obligations arising out of it. It often happens that people who are married want to get out of the legal union for some reason or another. Family lawyers help their clients to file for lawful separation before the court. Even annulments of marriages that are extremely short lived and non-consummated is facilitated by these lawyers using legal tools. Now, a special set of rights may also exist between couples who are in a romantic relationship without being married. In this case, also the lawyer informs them of their rights and if needed pursue the Court to grant it to their client.
These lawyers are also required to settle disputes arising from property division. The need for a lawyer arises when there is a rift between two or more heirs to a property. How much of property belongs to whom and on what basis is often a fodder for serious dispute amongst the family members. To represent each of their cases before the court and facilitate the proper distribution is the family lawyers work.
Alimony, visitation rights of parents seeking divorce also need the interference of family lawyers.
Protection of children from abuse of emotional or physical kind is also to be represented by a family lawyer in a family court.
The ascertaining of paternity and also the duty or parental obligations towards a child in case of careless parents to need the representation of family lawyers.
Career scope as a family lawyer
It is a well-known fact that even if other things in the world diminish, the family system and the various complications arising out of it will remain until humans remain on this planet. These complications have to be sorted always and in a legal manner. Thus, the need for family lawyers is never going to lessen in the near future. As long as domestic connections exist, this field will remain a rewarding profession for a lawyer. Albeit without proper understanding and knowledge of the subject, it is impossible to make a mark in this profession. However, if one is properly equipped with knowledge it is a highly rewarding field.
